Nadine Gordimer is a famous South African author, well-known for her anti-apartheid literature. Gordimer became involved in the Apartheid struggle while at University and after the Sharpville Massacre she decided to join the ANC while it was still listed as an illegal organization by the South African government. She became close to Nelson Mandela and his lawyers, helping and hiding them, and she was one of the first people Mandela wanted to see when he was released from prison. Gordimer's stories began being published in many South African magazines, despite many of them being banned, but were soon accepted by the New Yorker and became internationally known. Gordimer won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. Her inspirational and highly influential literature and activism is what makes Nadine Gordimer our Women of the Day.
